Downtown Oregon City: A Local Guide to What to See, Eat and Explore
Historic Main Street, river views, local shops and one of Oregon City’s most unusual landmarks make downtown worth a full afternoon

Downtown Oregon City packs a surprising amount into a walkable stretch of Main Street, with historic buildings, locally owned shops, restaurants, river views and landmarks that feel distinctly Oregon City.

Whether you are showing an out-of-town guest around or simply want to spend a few hours rediscovering your own city, downtown works best when you slow down and explore it on foot.

Start with the Municipal Elevator

The Oregon City Municipal Elevator is one of downtown’s signature sights and connects the lower downtown area with the bluff above.

The ride is free, making it an easy first stop, and the upper landing connects directly with the McLoughlin Promenade.

Current city hours list the elevator open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with holiday closures.

Walk the McLoughlin Promenade

At 300 Promenade Street, the McLoughlin Promenade is a 7.8-acre linear park overlooking downtown, the Willamette River and Willamette Falls.

The walkway was developed as a Works Progress Administration project and remains one of the easiest places in town to combine local history with a scenic walk.

Benches along the route make it a good place to stop, take in the view and get a different perspective on the historic district below.

Make Main Street the center of your visit

The Downtown Oregon City Association maintains a current business directory covering shops, restaurants and services throughout the district.

Independent businesses give the area much of its personality, from bookstores and collectibles to boutiques, antiques, cafés and restaurants.

White Rabbit Book Cafe at 503 Main Street combines books, gifts and locally made goods, while TrueBizy Toys & Gifts at 610 Main Street, Suite B, mixes nostalgic toys with newer favorites and collectibles.

Add a meal or coffee stop

Downtown’s food scene ranges from casual cafés and pub fare to pizza, Vietnamese and Thai food, Italian dining, wine bars and chef-driven restaurants.

That variety makes downtown easy to tailor to the day, whether you want breakfast and coffee, a relaxed lunch or a longer dinner.

Leave room to wander

Part of downtown’s appeal is finding something you did not plan for, whether that is an antique shop, a record store, a seasonal event or a view from the bluff.

The best approach is to treat downtown as a neighborhood to explore, not a checklist to finish.

Before heading out, check the Downtown Oregon City Association directory and the City of Oregon City pages for current business information, events and attraction hours.
